Participants: Diana Prince and Cassandra Sandsmark Open/Closed: Closed Location(s): An unnamed Greek island Time of Day: Night Weather: Overcast Summary: A strange pyre has been sighted burning in a ruined temple, formerly used to worship the Goddess Athena. Heading to investigate, Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl discover the area abandoned, and the fire magical in nature. The flickering light of the roaring fire cast long, strange shadows about the temple ruins, its glow reflected by the golden 'W' emblazoned across her chest. Over head, the night had drawn in, and the moon was lost behind an impenetrable cover of cloud, an oddly foreboding portent. But for the crackling of flames, the site was silent and still – unnaturally so: it seemed that even the earth underfoot and the creatures that roamed the deserted island held their breath. Cassie let out a soft 'huff' as air as she realized she'd been holding hers too. Looking side-on at her long time mentor and friend, the blonde teen eyed the Amazon warrior's face, searching for any sign that Wonder Woman was just as lost as her Titans' counterpart – who finally shrugged emphatically, a clear sign that studying the pyre had done little help her determine its origins, or indeed its purpose. Only hours before, the inferno had been sighted by an airborne Grecian film crew – an old Athenian temple ablaze, flames rising from a small island. News of its sudden appearance quickly made its way around the world, and the moment Cassie had seen it, her interest had been piqued. She was, after all, related to the Olympian deities – she took note when peculiar happenings occurred at ancient Grecian sites of importance. And she was not the only one. Indeed, Diana of Themyscira had also caught wind of the burning ruins. A short time later, following a brief but direct conversation via communicator, the pair had converged upon the oddity, hoping to discern its source, acting quickly to avoid what would, by sunrise, have no doubt become a media circus. Scouting the surrounding area and finding it empty, they had moved to inspect at the fire itself. They had found little in the way of clues, having only deduced that it was magical in nature. Indeed – it burned without any apparent fuel. Turning to look at the Amazon at her side, the Titan folded her arms about her middle and tilted her head, watching the older of the two for a long moment before sighing. “Any ideas?” Cassandra could think of a number of reasons why a mystic fire might have been lit, but very few were positive. She hoped the more experienced heroine might offer a different perspective, though in the pit of her stomach, she very much doubted it - the aura around the dancing flames was neither warm nor inviting.

The snap and crackle of the flame was almost taunting. The heat from it lapped against the front of her and her younger sister, but it was different than the suffusing warmth it should have been. Almost... pestilential, if something as ambient as heat could be considered such a thing. Diana's grey eyes were narrowed against the glare of the fire, flashing with wariness and fierce consideration.
"Several," she said after a pause in answer to Cassandra's question. "None of them pleasant." Finally, Diana turned away from the pyre, which had been the last item on the small isle to investigate. She looked skyward, noting the dense clouds that rolled overhead, then off into the distance. The night was dark enough that even her perceptions were affected more than she would've liked.
"Have you noticed no animal is on the island?" she asked, somewhat rhetorically. Diana looked now directly at Cassandra, lips pursing in wry thought. "Were I to guess, I'd say even the waters surrounding it are empty of life." She didn't like this situation they found themselves in at all. Not only did everything about it point toward danger and malice, but on another level whatever caused this pyre had desecrated a place of worship for Diana's most cherished patron in the process.
That made things worse. For the culprit, that is. "Whatever else, this fire is malevolent inherently. Can't you feel it? As though its fuel is anger instead of kindling." Diana scowled, propping one hand on her hip while the other grazed the lasso that was pinned, coiled and glowing softly on her waist.

Cassie sighed a little, looking at the ground when it was revealed that Diana, just like her protege, could only think of negative reasons for the pyre's existence. “At least it's not just me...” she muttered, wrinkling her nose a little, her sea-blue gaze returning to the dancing flames. There was a moment where neither spoke, just listening to the pervading silence – before the Amazon broke it, verbalising the observations she'd made of their surroundings.
Wonder Girl had noted the exact same things. She'd not seen a single living thing, bar her mentor, since arriving on the island, and the 'buzz' that so often heralded 'life' was chillingly absent. The blonde Titan nodded her agreement, doing so again when Diana suggested the fire was a construct of malevolence, fuelled by anger. While she wasn't an expert in magical flames – Cassie was an experienced enough heroine to know signs of malice when she saw them.
“Who would want to burn the ruins of a temple?” she queried aloud. “It's not been used in centuries...it's not exactly a prime location for an arsonist.” Unless, she thought, it had simply been a lure. The notion caused Cassie shiver a little, looking around herself – though she and Diana were still very much alone.
As she did so, she caught something in her peripheral vision – a strange shape in the fire. Her head snapped around, and she stared at the flames. For a moment – just one – they seemed to take the form of a leering face, before the illusion vanished as quickly as it had appeared. “Please tell me you saw that too...”

Diana continued to survey the ominous scene, brow creased in concentration. She trusted the combined instincts of herself and Cassandra to keep careful stock of their surroundings, falling into contemplation as she stood there. Goddess of Wisdom, help me to see, she prayed, using the eyes that Athena had blessed her with to slowly probe what she beheld. Wisdom, Diana knew, was not always about expediency, though. Sometimes only time could impart it.
"Who would want to burn the ruins of a temple? It's not been used in centuries...it's not exactly a prime location for an arsonist,” Wonder Girl pondered aloud and her older sister tilted her head, taken by the blonde's words down a new avenue of thought. One that had crossed her mind already, but that she was waiting for more confirmation to dwell or act upon. "But it's not burning," Diana pointed out. "The flames are independent. They've not consumed anything."
Wonder Woman was still finishing that sentence when the fire itself took momentary shape; a vaguely humanoid face grinning cruelly out at them. Quick as lightning it vanished, gone as soon as it'd assumed its form. Cassandra, ever making Diana proud with her awareness and growing skills, commented on it. "Unfortunately, yes." The elder Amazon's air of pensiveness was gone, now fully replaced by that of a battle-honed warrior prepared for the first strike of an adversary.
Behind the two hallowed heroines, a shape began to rise soundlessly from the barren side of the isle. As though shadows were coalescing and taking on substance. "I'm beginning to think we were expected." Diana turned- just in time to catch the horns of a helmet that had been barreling, prong first, at her backside. The helm adorned a male warrior, seven feet tall and dressed in Roman armor that hardly held his muscled physique. Wonder Woman may have caught the jagged horns meant to pierce her back, but the strength of its owner's charge was unprecedented.
Diana grunted and was carried by the behemoth backwards, clean through a lasting pillar of the temple.

An uncomfortable silence followed Diana's confirmation that she too had seen the face in the flames, and Cassandra's brow furrowed a little as she stared at the flickering tongues, searching for another glimpse of the visage and its twisted features. In the back of her mind, her sister's words repeated themselves – that anger is what had set the pyre burning, and that it fed of nothing physical. Magic, then – malevolant sorcery or some twisted witchcraft. 'I'm beginning to think we were expected.'Cassie tilted her head at the comment. “You mean it's a tr-” She didn't get to finish her query. As she inclined her head toward the Amazonian princess, a bullish male rushed Diana, shoulders lowered, twin horns – attached to an ornate helm - directed at her midriff. Somehow, Hippolyta's daughter had turned in time to catch her assailant, her hands keeping the metallic spikes from impaling her. However, surprised as she was, she didn't have the strength to halt his charge, and the force of his movement carried Wonder Woman through the nearest pillar, breaking clean through the aged stone. “Diana!” Cassie shouted after her sister, leaping into action but a heartbeat later, following the pair at an incredible speed. Where they'd landed, some lengths away from their initial contact, the brute had tried to crawl atop the Princess – an attempt to pin her so as to try goring her again. In doing so, he had turned a blind eye to Wonder Girl, who rapidly approached from their flank. “Hey! You forgot about me!” she shouted as she swung the most powerful punch she could at their assailant, swinging for the side of the hulking brute's face. As her fist connected with his jaw, he was knocked back from Diana, rolling twice, before springing up onto his feet. Cassie, on the other hand, winced and pulled her hand back sharply – clutching her knuckles with the other. A blow like that should have knocked him off the island and out to sea – not just a few feet away. And it most certainly shouldn't have felt like she'd just punched a wall – punched a wall before she'd become Wonder Girl. Glancing to Diana, she shook out her hand and wiggled her fingers, trying to work through the dull throbbing pain that had engulfed her lower right arm. “So he's tough,” she offered, rather unhelpfully. “Really, really tough.” Then again, so was Diana, and their attacker no longer had the element of surprise... Diana Prince Notes: Sorry for the wait. For some reason I thought I'd replied to this!

The centuries-old stone of the pillar shattered against her back, but Diana paid it no heed. Her focus was primarily on the wicked points of her assailant's barbed helm, and her efforts to stop them from gouging her. The blow that'd forced her through the column carried Diana and the armored foe through the air afterward, until they landed on the ground at a distance. She grunted with the impact while he pinned her there, lifting his head to try to ram the jagged horns through her. "Hey! You forgot about me!"Crack! Cassandra's fist met the shadowy attacker's jaw, throwing him aside. The sheer strength of the impact sent a miniature pulse of force through the air, buffeting Wonder Woman. She knew at once what Cassie did, based on all of the pieces of evidence: that punch ought to have sent him hundreds of feet. Not ten. Diana surged to her feet the moment she was free, dropping into a preparatory combat stance and placing herself between the entity and Wonder Girl, who was shaking her hand out. "So he's tough. Really, really tough.""Thank you. I'd gathered," Diana said grimly. Not in agitation with Cassandra, as her younger sister would well know. This foe was doubtless part of the trap they'd sprung. His strength was unprecedented and his affect on Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl pointed to obvious magical origins. As Cassie said: he was tough. Really, really tough. "We can't match him in strength," Diana said quickly, using the moments that the hulking figure took to get back on his feet. Not only had Cassie's blow been shrugged off, but Diana hadn't been able to throw him off of her when he'd pinned her before. "Which leaves skill." Wonder Woman wasn't going to make light of the grave situation, but her lip curled in contentment unbidden. She was sure that she and Cassandra, trained by and champions of the Amazons, surpassed this creature's skill. And, on another scale, it was very rare that Diana was presented with a challenging opponent such as this. One where she wouldn't have to pull her punches. Where she could put to use all the tools in her repertoire needfully. Cassandra Sandsmark

Cassandra raised a brow as Diana offered her assessment – that the champions of the Amazon couldn't match the brutish bull's strength. It wasn't something she'd heard often since accepting the mantle of Wonder Girl. Being able to go toe-to-toe with Kryptonians, she'd grown accustomed to being able to match pretty much anythings' physical might. Luckily, Wonder Woman didn't seem at all worried by the revelation – simply contemplative. 'Which leaves skill.'Cassie found her lips curling into the slightest of smiles. It might have seemed a rather grave situation, what with their being ambushed by a shadowy creature who, despite his hulking size, had been able to sneak up on the pair. Working with Diana though, nothing was ever quite as grave as it first seemed. Wonder Girl had experienced enough with her mentor to know she had a way of turning the tides in her favour. Unlooping her lasso from her waist, crimson energy arcing about its golden rope, she moved to stand next to the Princess of Peace, swinging her weapon of choice in a practiced circular motion. “Rodeo?” she offered, certain she'd not have to explain. “I prefer it to matador.” Indeed, both unspoken plans were dangerous – one tended to lead to unfortunate riders getting trampled, the other, bull fighters being gored. She just hoped they could overcome their adversay before facing either fate. Diana Prince

Diana was fully aware of how truly incredible and strong her sisters were. Still, they had a blessed tendency to surprise her, in the best ways. The wisdom and restraint that Cassandra was showing made pride fill the Amazon princess's chest. In answer to it, the odds of their adversary continued to dwindle. Not that either warrior was growing arrogant. The simple truth was that this armored behemoth was served the unfortunate fate of being set against two daughters of Themyscira. He didn't stand a chance. "Allow me to provide for you an opening," Diana answered to Cassandra's suggested strategy. Strength may have been out of the question, but that was one of the two Wonder's dullest tools. Diana darted forward, one hand reaching up to snatch her diadem from where it normally sat on her brow. Her hand flicked forward, loosing it, and the headdress glinted off of their adversary's dense armor, gouging it impossibly deep. The tiara rebounded, leaping back into Wonder Woman's hand, and she set it forth again, little more than a strobe-flash of light, bouncing from target to princess and back again. The Amazon had unleashed it three times in the space of as many strides, all hallowed and augmented by the blessing of Hermes. Upon the third time it returned to her waiting palm, Diana was within reach of their enemy. He leveled a blow, and she ducked beneath it skillfully... Right into another strike, aimed and delivered with uncanny agility. Wonder Woman's eyes went wide, not having expected such grace and tact from the lumbering enemy, even as air was driven from her lungs. She would not be denied. Through the slight daze of the blow, Diana rolled with the momentum of it, twisting in the air. She threw one leg out, placing a surgically precise kick at the back of the warrior's knee. He grunted and lost his footing, and Diana combined her agility and ability of flight to gain distance, moving far further than ought to have been possible with one acrobatic, twisting backward flip. Cassandra watched their enemy carefully as Diana approached, forging forward to give Cassie an opening to lasso the brute. With each step she took, Themyscira’s chosen protector flicked her diadem expertly, the enchanted headpiece, blessed by Hermes, travelling between Wonder Woman and foe as little more than a flash of light. Each strike dented the bullish male’s armour, carving gouges in the ornate breast plate – and then she reached him. Ducking his first strike, Diana was caught by the second, and Cassie let out a slight gasp – though she held her ground. As much as the blow to her mentor shocked her, she knew the long-lived warrior could handle herself. They’d formed a plan – sort of – and Wonder Girl fully intended to stick to it.
Confirming Cassie’s belief, Wonder Woman continued – unperturbed by the blow – and used the momentum of his punch to launch herself around their assailant, delivering a firm kick to the back of his knee. Letting out a roar of frustration, he dropped into a crouching position, and Diana utilised her unnatural agility, a twisting backward flip carrying her to a safer distance, away from failing arms and pronged horns.
Enraged by her assault, the hulking male turned his head, following Wonder Woman’s movement, and it was there Wonder Girl saw her opening. With the ‘bull’ momentarily hobbled and stationary, tracking its most recent opponent, broad back to the Daughter of Zeus, Cassie had an easy shot – and she expertly cast forth her blessed lasso, looping it about the male’s shoulders. Wrapping the length of golden rope about her hands for added grip, the Titan heaved, tugging with all her might, dragging the warrior to the ground.
Kicking and roaring, he raised his hands to the restrictive twine, trying to tug it from his body or tear it in two. He failed, and for his efforts, a bolt of lightning careened down its length, zapping its captive into hopeful submission. It apparently did little more than tickle – but at least the lasso held fast.

Diana's boots hardly contacted the ground in her dart for safety - the opening had hardly been delivered when Cassandra capitalized on it. Golden cord snapped into place around the bulled creature's shoulders, pinning his straining arms to his chest. Wonder Girl pulled fiercely, turning the thing's compromised footing to total loss, forcing him awkwardly to his knees.
The air sang with divine power, completely just in comparing it to the calm before the storm. In another moment, the lightning of Zeus himself exploded down the length of Cassandra's lasso, illuminating the lonely Grecian isle far more brilliantly than the guttering pyre. Diana squinted against the glare, hoping that the tactic would have a decent impact.
The fact that, even as the lightning faded, her hands were already on her own lariat, meant her trepidation had been well-founded. Diana flicked her wrist and her lasso fastened around Wonder Girl's, braiding the giant. "Cassandra. Up!" She launched off the ground, expecting her sister to pull in the same direction, until all three of them were suspended a hundred feet in the air, their adversary held taut at the point between them.
Diana's arms flexed and strained, in awe and surprise that, even doubly bound by godly powers, the creature could put up such a fight. "There has to be something we're missing," she called out to Cassandra.
