Full Name: Augustus Freeman IV
Aliases: Arnus, Augustus Freeman I-III
Marital Status: Widowed
Affiliation: Shadow Cabinet
Unique Physiology: Thanks to the DNA matrix in the lifepod that saved Icon’s life as he crashed to Earth, he has an altered hybridized human/Terminian genetic code resulting in him possessing a number of superhuman abilities not familiar to either Humans or Terminians.
Positron Manipulation - The positron energy Icon manipulates can be used for blasts as well as an effective EMP, or otherwise used to interact with quantum juice traces for the purpose of tracking Bang Babies.
Starship- A Cooperative vessel that is equipped for faster-than-light travel via access to Hyperspace.
Information Tool - A self-aware computerized database of virtually everything anyone within the Cooperative knows. It even contains very detailed files on the cultures, languages, history, and technology of Sol III (Earth) thanks to Icon's firsthand accounts of his life on the planet.
Maker - A molecular factory of sorts that concrete any physical item that is logged in the InfoTool. As long as a structure is on file within the InfoTool, the Maker can create it in seconds.
Naivete - Keeping himself closed off from the world following the passing of his wife has left Icon a bit out of touch with the world and his community at large.
Unprepared - When caught off-guard by an attack Icon is a lot more vulnerable than otherwise, even capable of being knocked unconscious for a few moments.
Outcast - Not truly human, but no longer exactly Terminian either, Icon finds it difficult to find a place to belong.
Arnus of Terminus was a well-respected mediator of the galactic council called the Cooperative. His role was to handle disputes among not only persons but entire civilizations, and Arnus was good at what he did. After a particularly lengthy, and large-scale, case, Arnus thought it important to take a vacation and find some relaxation in life. Unfortunately, the interstellar cruise ship he chose to vacation on came under attack. The resulting damage caused an explosion that was going to take the entire ship down, however, Arnus managed to make a hasty escape via one of the ships life pods.
Much like the starship, the life pod too was damaged with no way for Arnus to guide it or communicate with other survivors. Unable to plot a course the pod entered Earth space and crashed in the American South. The crash left Arnus in critical condition, however a failsafe within the life pod altered the DNA of the alien to save its life, causing the passenger to mimic and take on the appearance of whatever sentient life that was nearby. A slave woman found the pod, causing Arnus to be physically changed into the appearance of an African-American child.
Though appearance wise he was but an infant, Arnus still retained the intellect of his former self. He was stranded on Earth, forced into slavery where he learned the local language as well as the class system of his new world. As he grew older he came to love the woman, Miriam, who had become his mother. Now living as Augustus he worked to help and protect the slaves of the time, aiding in resistance movements such as the Underground Railroad. Augustus even served during the Civil War to fight against slavery. When the cruelness of slavery was abolished Augustus took on the last name “Freeman”.
Stuck on Earth he decided to bid his time until human technology caught up to his own so that he could eventually repair his ship and return home. Due to his Terminian physiology and the alterations of the life pod Augustus has learned himself to be virtually immortal, two-hundred years later he is still in peak condition - able to fool the public by posing as his own descendants. He is currently Augustus Freeman IV.
Using his skill and experience as a mediator Augustus was able to enroll in universities and secure a profession as an Earth lawyer. During the Harlem Renaissance Augustus met and fell in love with a woman named Estelle Jackson, and they were quickly wed.
Augustus told his wife about his past but she did not care, even if their biological differences kept them from having a child. Disillusioned by America and its continually strained race relations Augustus and Estelle went to live in France. Estelle encouraged Augustus to use his superhuman powers for good, and though he never went public he did commit a number of super heroics. During WWII Augustus fought for the Allies and hoped that a unified front against racial segregation would be paramount in aiding racial unity in the Americas.
After the war, he and Estelle returned to the States where things seemed to only get worse. In 1977 Estelle passed from cancer, something Augustus maintains as his fault as he could have saved her if only he’d been able to fix his ship. The death of Estelle made Augustus distant and he all but disappeared from the world, only working and returning home on the day to day, effectively becoming a recluse.
One night a group of youngsters broke into Augustus’s home and he was compelled to use his powers for the first time in decades. A girl within the group convinced Augustus to let them go, and in her, he saw his deceased wife. The young girl, who he would come to know as Raquel Ervin, returned later and struck up a friendship with Augustus, imploring him to become a hero that disenfranchised people deserved, much like Estelle had attempted prior. She called him an Icon, and together the two would fight all sorts of injustices, with Raquel donning a sophisticated piece of Terminus tech and adopting the name Rocket.
Augustus has since aided and mentored other heroes such as Hardware and Static. He’s also built a friendship with Superman over the years and has served on a number of teams, one such being the Shadow Cabinet that once clashed with the likes of the Justice League.
The sun was beating down unforgivingly on those who'd chosen to be out on this day. The heat was sweltering and for most, there was no hiding from the intense brightness that beamed down on them. Augustus's tan shirt clung to his skin adhering to the layer of sweat that soaked all the way through the cloth he wore. He was lending his aid to the people of Puerto Rico who were still suffering the ravages of the category 5 hurricane, Maria.
A little over a year ago the island had been decimated by winds and waters of the hurricane, and today they were still yet to recover entirely. Some places still lacked drinkable water, some places were still without power. Good samaritans the world over came to the island in cycles to help relief efforts in any way they could. When Augustus found that the people of Puerto Rico were still in non-liveable conditions he quickly added himself to the number of aides.
He worked on a roof, a hammer in one hand working the repairs, while the other hand shielded his eyes from the sun. There were no clouds out that day, the sky was a clear blue for as far out as the eyes could see, nothing at all to hinder the rays of the not-so-distant star.
Slowly Augustus pulled back the rest of the blue tarp that covered the roof he had now restored, he smiled at the shingles held in place by nails hammered by his own hand. <<"The help is largely appreciated, Mr. Freeman.">> One of the organizers of the relief efforts called up to the man on the roof, all around them workers buzzed about with their own responsibilities like a collective of bees keeping the hiving in operational conditions. Augustus gave a quick wave and returned the smile to the woman below as he began descending the ladder that'd gotten him onto the roof.
<<"It is my pleasure, Ma'am.">> He returned in Spanish, shaking the woman's hand graciously as he returned to the Earth. She gestured with a nod toward a small cooler a few feet away, <<"There's plenty of bottled water if you need a rest.">> People had been working around the clock since the early morning and she'd noticed the large lawyer hadn't yet taken a break like most others. <<"Good to know,">> Augustus maintained his smile, <<"However, there's still a lot of work to be done. The people need to know they haven't been forgotten, that we still care.">> He nodded at her and all she could do was nod back in return, over the course of a few days of working together she'd learned to just let Augustus Freeman work as he desired, there seemed to be no stopping him when he had his mind set on something.
So Augustus sat down his hammer and assisted another working in lifting a few heavy planks of wood, together they carried the supplies onto the next project. Helping in this way made the man truly feel like an Icon, knowing that he was putting his body to good use by helping folks survive and thrive. It was important that people knew there were more ways to be a hero than just donning a cape and a secret identity, even as far away from Dakota as Puerto Rico.
