Full Name: Richard ‘Dick’ Grayson
Age: late 20s
Aliases: Robin, Nightwing, Rich
Marital Status: Single but not for lack of trying.
Affiliation: Batfamily, Teen Titans, Titans, Outsiders, Justice League
Meta-Human Abilities: None
Master acrobat and aerialist: Dick Grayson is considered one of, if not the most skilled non powered Human acrobat on the planet, he is one of three people able to perform a Quadruple flip.
Peek human condition: Naturally gifted in terms of physical fitness and thanks to years of training with Batman and the best of the best, Dick’s body is in it’s prime for a man his age.
Escapology: Training with Batman as well as dealing Gotham’s more colourful crooks meant you got good at escaping death traps fast. Dick often carries lock picks with him in his gloves and boots and so handcuffs are never much of a challenge.
Master hand to hand combatant: Dick is well versed in multiple martial arts and in the use of weapons, he favours his Eskrima sticks but is able to use swords, staffs and other forms of melee weapons without much trouble.
Stealth: Dick is a master at becoming one with the shadows, even in his bright costume back in the day, his skills as a ninja and remaining unseen or heard for several hours was well documented and known through out his time on teams and in the field.
Polymath: While not on the same level as Tim or Bruce, Dick is by no means a slouch when it comes to pushing those little grey cells. He is a great detective, can speak several languages such as Romani, French, Japanese, Chinese, German and Spanish to name a few, he is well versed in chemistry, physics and biology to aid in forensic investigations and also a dab hand with engineering and shows great mechanical aptitude with cars. Dick is also a competent hacker, able to breach simple to moderately complex systems.
Batsuit: More lightweight and Bruce’s to fit Dick’s much more agile style of movement, it still provides protection from small to medium arms fire, able to reduce the damage of a piercing weapon. It contains a commlink in the cowl with the cape allowing Dick the ability to glide.
Access to the ‘Bat garage’: Dick has access to all variations of the Batmobile, Batwing, Batboat and Batbike. As Batman and Robin, the duo often makes use of a flying Batmobile. No I’m serious.
Utility belt: The most important tool in any Batfamily’s arsenal, this houses all the gadgets and tools needed in the field such as Batarangs, smoke bombs, small explosives, a compact forensic kit and much more depending on the situation.
Human: Despite everything above, Dick is still very much flesh and blood and is just as suspectable to the dangers of the world as any other ordinary citizen.
Physical space: Dick can only carry so much on the belt and not everything may be useful in a pinch.
Maintaining relationships: He just can’t. His two great loves in his life would attest that despite his honest desire for commitment, there is something that always pulls him away.
Optimistic: Out of everyone in the Batfamily, Dick maybe the most hopeful of them all. While in by no means naive, his slightly sunnier disposition can lead him to make the wrong judgment call when a more pragmatic view would help the situation.
Richard Grayson grew up wanting to fly and as the youngest member of the flying Graysons, he got to do just that. By the age of 7 he was performing leaps and feats of aerial splendour that wowed crowds and stunned the patrons of Haley’s circus on a regular basis. With the support and love of his parents, Dick as he liked to be called, became a sensation on the circus circuit.
When he was 12, the circus was brought to Gotham City, a city that seemed to be cast in shadow and murk, with tales of a demon bat punishing the wicked. Which to a 12-year sounded pretty freaking cool! Dick was outside rehearsing when he heard an argument with a sleezy guy in a suit and Mr Hayley. The Ringmaster and owner of the circus managed to get the man away before anything troublesome could happen. Until that night.
Dick performed with his family, slicing through the air for the customers below. Little did they know that the trapeze had been tampered with and as Dick was ready to make another jump, the rope snapped and his parents plunged to their deaths, right before the young man’s eyes. As well as Bruce Wayne’s.
Two weeks in the foster system and he was pulled out by Wayne, the man sympathising with the boy due to his own trauma. There were…growing pains. Dick missed his family tremendously and refused to eat unless pushed by Alfred, he refused to spend time outside and instead brooded in his room. The odd times he did venture out, Bruce was never there, always working late or at a gala or some elitist event. And still the Grayson’s killer remained at large. They knew who he was, Tony ‘Boss’ Zuko and no one did anything. One night Dick had enough and set out to bring Zuko down himself. He didn’t know how, but he would.
The young man bit of more than he could chew. By simple luck he had found some of the man’s associates, only to be cornered and his life threatened. Just another street kid lost to Gotham’s cruelty. Or so they thought until The Batman arrived. Dick found himself passing out after the 3rd thug was taken down by Batman only to wake up several hours later in a cave, tended to by Alfred.
Here, Dick learnt that Bruce and Batman were one and the same which only pushed Dick to press Bruce for help in bringing Zuko down. Reluctantly but seeing the drive in the boy, Bruce agreed and together worked the case, Dick showing a strange talent for detective work, and brought Zuko down in a climactic fight. Dressed in his gear from the circus, Dick chased Zuko to a cage where the man realising who Dick was, died of a heart attack from the sheer shock of it all.
Six months later, Bruce had trained Dick as best he could and after surviving ‘the gauntlet’, the young man had become Robin, Boy Wonder and Batman’s partner. He saw his new super hero status as a grand adventure, often cracking wise and saving the day with a smile.
Dick continued to prove his worth as a hero, teaming up with his friends Kid Flash, Aqualad, Donna Troy and Speedy, the teenagers freed their mentors in the Justice League of mind control and became the Teen Titans, there Dick found his self worth, becoming a better Robin, a better hero because of his friends and the connections he had made.
As he grew older he grew more bold, going out on solo missions and fighting crime with his friends. But as collage came around the Teen Titans gained further commitments and thus disbanded. It was around this time Batgirl made her debute, with Dick smuggling her supplies to aid her crusade against crime before she officially joined the family. For a time, Batman, Robin and Batgirl were the premier vigilante team in Gotham.
However, it all came to a close as a harsh reality was introduced to the boy wonder: You can’t save everyone. A case that lead to Two-Face, resulted in Dick accidentally being the cause of the new DA’s death. Shocked, Two-Face took the chance to punish Batman further and brutally assaulted the young hero with a baseball bat. Dick survived but Bruce was shaken and fearing for his partner’s safety forbade Dick from being Robin.
Depressed and angry at himself, Bruce and all that he had become, Dick broke ties with Bruce and Alfred, broke off his relationship with Barbra and dropped out of college. He cashed in his trust fund that Lucius Fox had turned into a small fortune, and went on the road. It was here that he was summoned by a dark power, reuniting with old friends and new ones where they formed the New Teen Titans. This team became Dick’s family as he lead them from one crisis to another, regaining his self-worth and belief as Robin finally became a fully fledged super hero.
He however found himself growing out of the notion of being Robin, even more so when he discovered Bruce had recruited a new partner, a new Robin. Betrayed and furious that Bruce would co-opt the nick-name his mother gave him, Dick left in a fury, vowing to never return. He burnt his old suit and sought a new path. A path he discovered thanks to Superman. He told Dick of an outcast who sought to fight injustice and took the name Nightwing. Inspired by this, Dick created a new identity and anew suit, more inline with his family’s old uniforms and introduced the Titans and the world to Nightwing.
As Nightwing he led the titans through hard times, broke off his relationship with Starfire and was around for the death of Jason Todd, the second Robin. Dick returned to Wayne Manor, feeling partly responsible for not being around when the kid needed him. As Bruce spiralled he was confronted by a young man named Tim Drake who had deduced his time as Robin. Dick refused to help, stating he was never going to be Robin again, even if to help Bruce which inadvertently pushed Tim to fill the position.
Dick was forced back to help his mentor when Batman was beaten and broken by Bane, filling the role of Batman for a brief time while Bruce was healing. When he returned Dick gave him back the cowl, gladly.
In a new, slicker suit and after forming a tight bond with Tim, Dick made a change. He removed himself from Gotham and moved to Bludhaven where he became it’s protector. There he stayed for several years, becoming a police officer and working tirelessly to fix the city from inside and out. He even made several new enemies including the formidable Blockbuster. Dick was pulled back to Gotham later on to help the family contend with a massive gang war across the city, leaving behind his own which later suffered a devastating chemical attack.
Broken in spirit and body, Nightwing recovered at Wayne Manor where he confided in Bruce that Blockbuster had died due to his inaction and begged for forgiveness. Bruce responded by saying that it was Dick who had to forgive himself. He went travelling with Bruce and Tim for a year, rediscovering his past ideals and his strengths, building himself back up with his family.
Dick returned to Gotham with the family before venturing off to New York to work a case with the old Titans. However despite his efforts, Dick was pulled back to Gotham once more went the villainous Doctor Hurt came to take apart Batman piece by piece. After a traumatic series of events which left Dick deranged and drugged, before he fought back and regained his mental faculties, The fate of Bruce Wayne was left up in the air, a body missing, his ruined cape and cowl in Dick’s hand.
It later transpired Bruce had survived, only to go work a case for the Justice League and suffer at the hands of none other than Darkseid. Seemingly perishing. With Batman dead, Gotham was thrown into chaos as the Battle for the Cowl ravaged the city. It was with great regret and reluctance that Dick finally gave in and accepted what he had to be. Who he needed to become in order for Gotham and his loved ones to survive. He had to become the night. He had to be Batman.
Taking on Damian as Robin while Tim left to chase leads on Bruce, the new Batman and Robin soon made their stamp on things by apprehending the deranged Mr Pyg, Flamingo, Mr Toad and a rematch with Red Hood and his new partner, Scarlet. They teamed with Batwoman and fought against a resurrected Bruce Wayne, who was discovered to be a clone from Darkseid’s bunker. As Dick and Damian unravelled a sinister plot, they were soon under attack from Talia and Deathstroke who took control of Damian. After freeing his father’s son, Damian and Dick were there for the return of Bruce Wayne, and the end of Barbatos and John Hurt’s quest for the destruction of the house of Wayne.
Bruce now returned, it was agreed that for now, Dick could remain Batman. The Batman of Gotham. Residing in the Penthouse of Wayne Tower, Dick Grayson remains ever ready to fight for the right, to rid the city of the evil that threatens the good people of Gotham and ensure that no one is lost to the dark along the way.
The smoke from industrial chimney’s bellowed out of the mighty smoke stacks, wafting up into the air and gripping the sky in a dull grey cloud. Dick held onto the ledge of a near by building, binoculars out as he looked down towards the stack’s base. “There you are.” He spoke to himself as he placed his binoculars away with a click on the belt. It still felt off, still felt like a kid wearing his dad’s over sized clothes. Ill-fitting and baggy, ready to trip him up at a moment’s notice.
However, he couldn’t afford the self-doubt. Bruce had said so himself. Dick Grayson was Batman, one of many now and so far, he and Damian had become a well-oiled team. Dick pushed himself off, gliding over and down suddenly to the base of the chimney where his eyes locked onto the small device. A Wayne tech prototype, since they couldn’t hold onto anything these days, that from the specs he’d pulled from the bat-computer, showed it had been tampered with. A simple fix though, cut the red wire, pull out the thing, save the city. Easy-peasy, standard super hero business.
Dick set to work, concerned with how easy this was going to be, when right on que, A bull whip came flying from behind him, forcing Dick to duck and weave while at the same time, nimble and perfectly trained fingers filched a batarang from his belt and let it loose. It was shot out the air. “Flamingo, you’re the hired gun on this?” Batman smiled, moving to the side since he knew the man wasn’t going to let up, he had to keep moving, remain airborne if needs be. A moving target and all that.
“How many times? Batman does not smile!” The deranged assassin shouted, letting off more and more shots from his silver, pearl grip hand guns. Batman dove down into a roll, letting loose a small button sized device that suddenly let out a blinding flash. “This Batman does.” He was in the air again, right in front of Flamingo the cape spread, eyes squinted. He WAS Batman, and a powerful straight right to the assassin’s jaw made sure he remembered that.
