Full Name: Arthur Curry
Archetype: Meta Hero
Marital Status: Married
Affiliation: Aqua Family / Justice League
Atlantean Physiology: As an Atlantean, Arthur’s body is adapted to the rigorous conditions necessary to survive in the deepest oceans, as well as possessing an advantage on land. He possesses enhanced senses (sight, sound, hearing, smell, taste), as well as superhuman durability, speed and strength. His abilities are enhanced further by his being of royal blood, exceeding that of the average Atlantean.
- Enhanced Senses: Underwater, Arthur's senses are several times better than that of an average, healthy human. On land, their strength diminishes slightly, but remain well above that of the average human. For example, he has exceptional night vision due to the adaption of his eyes to the darkness of the depths, the downside of which is the time it takes for his eyes to adjust to bright lights since he's in the dark so much.
Superhuman Durability: Arthur’s body composition is quite dense due to adapting to the crushing pressures found on the ocean floor, making him almost impervious to most small arms fire and blows.
Superhuman Speed: Underwater, his speed and maneuverability is yet to be matched by anyone. On land, his speed and agility is slightly above that of the world's fastest human.
Superhuman Strength: Arthur is capable of lifting ten tons at a given time. In addition, his leg muscles, which have been adapted to the crushing weight of water pressing down on him, allow him to jump fifteen feet into the air while on land.
Accelerated Healing: Arthur’s body can heal itself faster than the average human or Atlantean, though more severe (see: near fatal) wounds take longer to heal.
Marine Telepathy: Through a connection with the life force of the sea known as The Blue, Arthur possesses the ability to communicate directly with all sea life and, to an extent and with greater difficulty, some aquatic mammals. It is more than just talking to fish - he can understand them and influence them to act on his behalf, preferring not to force them out of respect for their minds.
- Expert Combatant: Arthur is a formidable foe in armed and unarmed combat, capable of going toe-to-toe with Superman and some of the League’s finest.
Master Swimmer: His innate ability as an Atlantean combined with a life spent under the sea has made him the best swimmer there is.
Experienced Tactician: Arthur has shown an affinity for leadership, displaying a poised control of Atlantis’ military forces, one of the greatest armies in the world.
Accomplished Diplomat: As King of Atlantis, Arthur has tried to improve land-sea relations with much success, his influence as a hero and his imposing figure acting as a deterrent to any world leaders or would be usurpers seeking to overthrow Atlantis.
- Trident of Neptune: The trident, formally belonging to the god of the sea, Neptune, is not only a mighty weapon but also a symbol of the right to rule the seas. With it, Arthur can command the sea to conjure up massive tidal waves, whirlpools and columns of water. It can control the weather and unleash bolts of lightning from its tip. It is also a very formidable weapon in physical combat in the hands of a master.
Water Deprivation: Arthur must return to water after a period of time or he will weaken and eventually die. He can be dried out by exposure to excess heat, and must always remain near a body of water in order to retain his strength. His weakness can be staved off a little by excess humidity in the air.
One particularly dark and stormy night, the unconscious body of a young woman cradling an infant washed up on the shores of a lighthouse in Amnesty Bay, Maine, where she was discovered by the lighthouse keeper, Tom Curry, who nursed her back to health. Over time, he grew to love Atlanna (as she was called) and raised the child as his own, giving him the name Arthur.
While the boy was still young, Atlanna told Tom of the life she had left behind as queen of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis and how she had fled with the baby, whose blond hair was thought to be a curse. She told him that someday when the time was right, her son (whose given name was Orin by his real father, the immortal wizard Atlan), would return and take his rightful place as heir to the throne. Soon after that, Atlanna vanished as mysteriously as she had appeared on that fateful night, leaving the boy to be raised by the lighthouse keeper.
Arthur spent the rest of his formative years frolicking in the waves and discovering his abilities. In his late teens, he began a life of heroism, guiding ships to safety in the midst of perilous storms. His adopted father fell ill, but before dying passed on the knowledge of his origins, and Arthur left Amnesty Bay behind to search for the kingdom of Atlantis.
His quest took him all over the world, including Alaska, where he fell in love with an Inuit woman and unbeknownst to him, fathered a son. He eventually stumbled across Poseidonis, one of two city-states that made up the kingdom of Atlantis. Once again, because of the blond hair that had him tossed out from Atlantis in the first place, he was seized and placed in a prison camp, where he met Vulko, also a prisoner of the state, who taught Arthur the language and ways of the Atlanteans. It was in this prison camp that Arthur saw his mother, who was also a captive.
After some time, he reemerged in the surface world and fully embraced the moniker of Aquaman, eventually joining the Justice League and seeking to do some good in the world. Not too long after becoming Aquaman, he found an orphan, Garth, who was cast out of Poseidonis when he was a baby because of his unnatural purple eyes. Arthur took him under his fins, so to speak, and trained him to be Aqualad.
Around the same time that Arthur returned to Poseidonis to stake his claim on the throne and was crowned king, he met Mera, an undersea queen from another dimension who had come to request his help after being thrown out of her kingdom. After ousting the usurper, the two fell in love and were married not long after. The couple had a son, and named him Arthur Jr.
His reign as King was filled with tragedy, starting with the death of the infant at the hands of Aquaman’s most dogged enemy, Black Manta. This drove a wedge between him and Mera, who became insane and blamed Arthur for the loss of their child. He discovered that another of his greatest enemies, Ocean Master, was actually his half-brother Orm Marius, and this plunged him into depression. Arthur lost a hand when the terrorist Charybdis stuck it in a piranha infested pool, and replaced the hand with a harpoon. His first son, Koryak, attempted to seize control of Atlantis twice, but was thwarted by his father. Following the events of Obsidian Age, Arthur was ousted from power and tried for high treason at one point, which led to his escape and receiving a magical watery hand from a being called the Lady of the Lake.
After a section of the city of San Diego was sunken, Aquaman came to the aid of the survivors of the catastrophe, who were unable to return to land on account of having their DNA mixed with Atlantean genes by a scientist named Anton Geist. One of these survivors was Lorena Marquez, who assumed the identity of Aquagirl after Ocean Master magically swapped bodies with Aquaman and was defeated.
Arthur was later reunited with Mera after the Blackest Night event, but their joy was shortlived by Aquaman’s discovery that he can control undead sea life, which backfired terribly. Arthur lamented the way the citizens of Atlantis have discarded him, only needing him when it suits them, but Mera assured him that she would be there for him when no one else was, thus restoring their relationship. When Mera’s sister, Siren, attacked the duo in the Bermuda Triangle, it is revealed that Mera was from Xebel, and was sent originally to kill Arthur. Arthur also sought out Jackson Hyde, who he saved from Manta and Siren along with the boy’s adoptive father. Arthur instructed the new Aqualad to fight against the Xebellian forces, and during the fight, Black Manta reappeared and severed Arthur’s hand. The wound was cauterized by Jackson’s electrokinesis and Aquaman resumed the fight, turning the tide with an army of sea creatures. Eventually, the group, joined by Aquagirl, pushed back the Xebellians as well as Manta and sealed them away. They celebrated, but a blast from the White Ring that Deadman wore again took the Aquaman away from his family. He is later returned to life in good health, his hand repaired and his control over undead sea life no more.
A forlorn sigh escaped his lips as Orin knelt at the side of the orca, stroking the blubber gently before pulling the harpoon from the whale’s side. “You fought well, my friend. Now, you must rest.” The whale gave what appeared to be a slow, silent nod before drifting off into the depths, leaving Orin to deal with the industrial whaling ship above. It sullied the waters of the Arctic simply by its presence, and the men who piloted them and worked on them showed a flagrant disregard for the laws that governed these waters with their overfishing.
With a powerful kick, he launched himself out of the water onto the deck of the nearest ship and pounded the blunt end of his trident on the deck with a thunderous crack, grabbing the attention of those who weren’t already facing him.
“By decree of the King of the Seven Seas, I order you to cease your activities here and return to the mainland, or face the ocean’s wrath.” He felt the eyes of the men on him, causing him to grip his trident tighter. One of the crew members stepped up to face him, bringing his face dangerously close to Orin's and poking his chest with a finger, but Orin kept calm. "Is that so, fish-man? I think we'd like to see you try."
"Just take your catch and leave, sailor. I won't say it again." The crewman contemplated his words for a bit before spitting in his face and walking away, and the rest of the crew members laughed, resuming their work. Orin glared at them, resignation setting in. He had tried the peaceful method. Now they would learn what it meant to trifle with a king. The Atlantean dove into the water and broke off the ship's propellers. Next to be done away with was the net brimming with fish that trailed alongside the ship, then he turned his attention to the anchor, gripping it firmly with his hands. Upthrust would serve to relieve most of the ship's weight. All he needed to do was move it in the desired direction. Slowly, so that they wouldn't notice, he began to propel the vessel through the water, increasing his speed as the momentum built until they got to Gotham Bay.
"I could have left you stranded in open water, but this will suffice. The Coast Guard might be along shortly to pick you up." He announced from atop a pillar of water to the now visibly scared crew before departing with a wink at the one who had taunted him.
