Vengeance - His hatred for Aquaman (and all of Atlantis to a degree) drives Black Manta to commit the atrocities associated with his name. When Aquaman was dead Manta adopted an ordinary life and spent years working as a butcher. When Aquaman returned from the dead, so did Black Manta, reverting from the quiet life of monotony to once again wage war against the King of Atlantis.
As a youth, the boy who would grow to become Black Manta was raised on the seas in a houseboat with his father. At a young age, he gained a reputation as an excellent diver and fantastic treasure hunter, exactly what his father had been raising him to be. His father was a man who had seen and witnessed a lot during his life on the sea, and as such he vehemently believed in the existence of Atlantis, which was something he always dared to prove.
Much of the father and son's time was spent treasure hunting while also trying to prove the whereabouts of the lost city of Atlantis, they had gained something of notoriety by other sailors who thought the father mad and his son a sad pawn in all of it. However, they were eventually contracted by a man named Stephen Shin. Stephen Shin was a marine biologist who was friends with a lighthouse keeper named Thomas Curry. Dr. Shin believed that the boy Thomas was raising was from the city of Atlantis, and he wished to prove it. Using the treasure hunting duo Shin hoped to get a blood sample from Arthur Curry to prove that he has not human, or at least not fully. The father and son went ashore and tried to kidnap young Arthur Curry, but his father came to his rescue. In the resulting fight Thomas Curry suffered a massive heart attack and died, though to young Arthur Curry it appeared to be murder - and he swore vengeance.
On the day that was Thomas's funeral his son went out to the seas and hunted for the men who had killed his father. Arthur stormed their boat and in the darkness and rain, he murdered the father, who he believed responsible for his father's death. Finding his father murdered, and Arthur fleeing their boat, the son declared vengeance on the Atlantean. He soon began creating weapons to aid him in his fight against his father's murderer.
Once off of the boat he was raised on it was discovered the boy had a condition that medical science was no quite ready to understand or treat. Extreme experimentations were forced on the boy, making him even more traumatized than he already was. Whether the experiments were a success or not cannot be confirmed, but he came out of it all with a deeper hatred for Arthur Curry, who at this point had come out to the public as Aquaman. With his enemy adopting a name a costume, so did he; Black Manta.
Black Manta began small-scale assaults on Atlantis, beginning with attacking their agricultural systems though that ultimately failed. He could remember being a boy and his father telling him stories of the Black Pearl, a mystical artifact that was said to be able to gain complete dominance of the sea. Black Manta began a campaign to locate the artifact so that he could wipe out all of Atlantis in an instant. Manta's search for the Black Pearl led him to the enigmatic Bermuda Triangle, where instead he discovered the lost Atlantean Kingdom called Xebel.
While in Xebel Manta would need a guide to lead him to the legendary Black Pearl, he met one in the form of a young girl curious about the surface world; her name was Lucia. He told her his name was David Hyde (which may or may not have been an alias) and that he would take her to live with him on the surface as soon as his quest was over. Lucia was in love with the man from the surface but she needed to test him, she knew where the map to the treasure he sought was. Lucia gave Manta a false map to test his character and upon learning the map was a fake he failed. Manta nearly killed Lucia in his anger and abandoned her in the prison that was Xebel, unknowingly living with her his unborn son.
Unable to secure the ultimate weapon that was the Black Pearl, Manta returned to fighting Aquaman the old-fashioned way: with tech of his own design. What would become Black Manta's most infamous act against Aquaman, started as a mercenary takeover of a smaller Atlantean colony. In order to keep his hold of this tribe of Idylists, Black Manta forced Aquaman and Tempest into a battle to the death, while he had kidnapped Aquaman's newborn son and stored the infant in an air chamber where it would slowly suffocate unless Aquaman or Tempest came out victorious. Though the heroes managed to break free of Black Manta's arena they were too late to save Aquababy. Aquaman hunted Manta down and swore to avenge his son, however with the villain at his mercy Aquaman decided it was best to end the cycle of death between them.
Arrested after his murder of Aquababy, Black Manta did not remain incarcerated for long. After escaping and running amok for some time Black Manta agreed to a deal with the demon Neron and as an end result was transformed into a man-manta ray hybrid. At this time Manta began running drugs, using Star City as a hub to do so, commonly coming into conflict with Green Arrow in the process. Before long Manta and Aquaman would cross paths once more, this latter now sporting a magical waterbearer hand from the Lady of the Lake. The magic imbued in Arthur's hand was able to reverse Neron's transformation of Black Manta and he was a man once more.
After an earthquake ravaged California, a large portion of San Diego was sunken into the sea, many Atlanteans took to this portion of sunken city and remained it Sub Diego. When The Spectre went mad and tried to wipe out all magic Atlantis was one of the many places attacked. As Atlantis crumbled into ruin the Atlantean refugees escaped to Sub Diego under the protection of Aquaman, Mera, and Aquagirl. Sub Diego thus became a target of Black Manta's, however Aquaman was able to summon a number of sea creatures and herd them all into attacking Manta. This wouldn't be the last Sub Diego saw of Black Manta though, as he quickly regrouped and returned to take over with an army of robots and henchmen. His takeover was short lived though as King Shark attacked the man to defend his new home. Manta became dormant for a while, laying low after nearly having his face taken off by King Shark. In that time Aquaman had made a pact with the Sea Gods in a desperate bid to save and restore San Diego, however, the spell also turned him into a monstrosity known as the Dweller of the Deep.
The Dweller of the Deep eventually perished at the hands of a rogue revived Koryak, now called Narwhal, who operated under the command of a twisted Atlantean church. With his foe now supposedly long dead Black Manta felt his calling was gone. He sank away into obscurity and began living what others would call a normal life. That all changed with the Black Lanterns arrived and resurrected Arthur Curry. After the zombified heroes were returned to their former living selves David Hyde quickly reverted back to Black Manta. Having believed Aquaman was dead, Manta believed he had nothing to live for. But when Aquaman was revealed to be alive he knew his purpose once more and that was to destroy everything the Atlantean loved.
Black waters rolled and crashed against the slate steel of a high-speed vessel. The keel cleaved through the ocean waves like a sharpened harpoon penetrates flesh, with no resistance at all. Light arched across the sky, flashing radiant blues and purples across the otherwise ink-black canvas. Gloom hung densely in the air, feeding the rumblings that rolled betwixt the muddy gray clouds where thunder crashed and roared with great vigor. Agitation on the water surface caused the ship to bounce jaggedly; further above, voices shouted out and were carried off in the night wind.
Shipping containers creaked under stress as they wobbled threateningly, all the while rain-slicked bodies ran about the deck of the vessel trying their damnedest to secure cargo. Iron and metal twisted due to pressure and strain of the gales buffeting them along with the violent churning of the ocean itself. It was an uneasy ride, but not one that they weren't expecting or prepared for. The strait they sailed for was infamous for its near impossible passage. They had been warned that only madmen ventured through such a route, to attempt such a course of travel was nothing short of suicidal. The crew did not heed local warnings, they had plotted their course and they had planned for the storm. All that was left was to hold on as tightly as they could until their state of the art watercraft got them through the supposedly impossible channel.
Masses of land grew larger on either side of the ship as they ventured into the strait, its narrow pathway daunting to most but treated as a mere inconvenience to the crew in question. Carefully they navigated the inlet avoiding the rocks that protruded through the waves, stones that had no doubt broken and torn meager boats to pieces. Their vessel was not one such boat, it was a beautiful craft of engineering and technology, it was created to weather the most deadly of storms in its hulking form; an elegant monstrosity. As the large ship raced along the length of the channel displacing water as it went, a smaller entity followed in its shadow.
Something was in the water. This was not something adrift caught in the current made in the vessel's wake. This was something that moved with a purpose, something that moved twice as elegantly as the ship that escorted it. This was something that possessed thought, and also great power to keep up with the knots of such an advanced ship. Whatever it was, its presence was only apparent by the ripple that moved along the waves of the strait. The ripple soon broke off from strictly following the tow of the larger vessel, it moved to the port side of the hull, racing side by side. The light of the moon reflected off of something sleek and lustrous in the water. The waters parted in a mighty splash as something dark flew from the waves. Few men were present on the deck to witness the arrival of the black-suited individual.
Water rolled off of the shining silver helmet, rushing down in small streams over the infamous black wetsuit. Black Manta had come aboard. "Your vessel has been commandeered by Black Manta, throw yourselves overboard now and save me the trouble of having to do it myself." Though the words came from an oversized metal helmet they were crystal clear, as well as the murderous intent weaved into them. The fools did not do as they were instructed though, as they had sworn to protect the cargo and were informed to expect threats of this nature. Manta only gave the troop of three men mere seconds to react, when they did not do as he wished a silver blade sprang forth from the sleeve of his suit. The mariners were dispatched by Black Manta in quick succession, their blood mixing with the rainwater that ran over the deck of the ship edge and returned to the sea.
Slow and steady footfalls denoted the arrival of their plunderer. The men who were encountered inside the vessel had armed themselves now, they utilized weaponry that none on the surface would otherwise have access to. Sadly for them, Black Manta had encountered such weaponry before, they might as well had attacked with sticks and wads of paper, his suit had been designed to handle what they were capable of throwing at him. Multiple clashes with the King of Atlantis himself had led him to such advances. And the man from the depths had also led Black Manta where he now stood, in a way. The vessel was a transport ship, a mightily fancy one, imbued with Atlantean tech so that it could safely carry Atlantean artifacts. Aquaman was planning to bring pieces of Atlantis to the surface world, it was being shopped around as a way for the humans on the surface and the Atlanteans to bond. But Manta saw it for what it truly was, a hostile takeover.
Manta ran his blade across the throat of a sailor and the man went limp in his grasp. He made a slow step over the crumpled heap that was formerly a man. The red, haunting eyes of his large helmet leveled on the Captain of the ship, a man well into his Sixties who'd sailed the sea numerous times and faced off against many a pirate - but he'd encountered nothing like Black Manta. "Y-you can't! This vessel is under the protection of the Atlantean Royal Guard! A-A-Aquaman himself!" The moron in green and orange tights was supposed to mean something on the waves, his name was meant to instill great fear or even great respect, for Black Manta it only fanned the flames of his undying rage.
The Captain backed away nervously to create what he felt would be a safe distance between himself and the lumbering killer. His eyes were filled with fear as he tried to find some sort of humanity hidden behind the large red lenses that just stared coldly at him. It wasn't supposed to go like this. They were supposed to be protected. There was never supposed to be any real danger on this mission. He promised! "Aquaman promised!" Desperation choked at the Captain's throat as he backed himself into a literal corner. "He'll come. Aquaman will come! He gave his word to protect us!" The ship had been granted passage thanks to the King of the Seas and he had given a heartfelt promise to come to their aid should they need it. But now men were dead and Arthur Curry was nowhere to be found. "Call out for him if you must, but know that Aquaman fails all who need him most." The Captain opened his mouth to scream but Black Manta was already upon him, running the length of his dagger through the man's belly, his life was gone before the screams could even leave his throat. Aquaman had been foolish in his attempt to ship his precious cargo to the site on the surface, and now men had paid for his errors. Such disregard for life would not go ignored by the Sea King, which meant Black Manta now had his full attention - as well as a brand new ship of ingenious design.
The ship left the strait far behind as it settled onto smoother waters. Manta relaxed and steadied his breath after removing the dead weight from his new sea vessel.
