Subject Attributes
Meta-Human Abilities: N/A
Standard Abilities:
Genius Level Intellect: Jervis is in possession of a genius intellect and inventive nature, especially within his fields of expertise. Sure, he is a man who is deeply delusional and disturbed, but all the same, he is arguably also an absolute expert within those very fields of expertise. The fields specifically are:
- Neural science: Jervis is an accomplished neural scientist, which combined with his specialism with Electrical engineering and bio-chemistry makes him a force to be reckoned with.
- Electrical Engineering/Gadgetry: Jervis skills within electrical engineering is cutting edge, truly that of an expert and pioneer. The most well known proof of this is Jervis most prolific gadget, a device that once worn allows him to control the wearer's mind, and thus the person, completely. These devices are usually hidden within headwear, though they could in theory be placed upon anything.
- Bio-Chemical specialist: The second field in which Jervis specializes is bio-chemistry, which he has used to create among many other things a compound that when imbibed or entering the bloodstream will have the same effect as his mind control devices, but to a lesser degree. This compound can be mixed into liquids or injected directly.
Paraphernalia:
- Mind control hats: The most iconic gadgets in the Mad Hatter's arsenal, the hats allowing Jervis to control anyone who wears them through vocal commands, until the hat is removed.
- Mind control chemicals: The other means by which Jervis can affect, alter or otherwise manipulate the minds of others, though typically imbibed or injected, sometimes it can also be inhaled, though regardless of how it enters a victim's system, it won't ever work quite as strongly or completely as the mechanical devices.
- Gas Gun: Another gadget of Jervis design, this special gun allows Jervis to either poison or use his mind control compounds on a target, or lay out a smokescreen to cover his escape.
Subject Weaknesses:
- Delusions: Jervis Tetch suffers from serious delusions, alternating between a dream world in which he believes himself the Mad Hatter, and the real world wherein there is simply Jervis, though the greatest driving force, uniting both worlds, is Jervis all consuming obsession with Alice, believing the titular girl from the works of Lewis Carroll to not only exist, but to be his one true love as well. This makes promises of helping Jervis find his beloved Alice quite the effective motivation for getting him to comply with requests. However, it is this obsession that also spurs Jervis to kidnap women fitting Alice description of blonde hair and clear eyes.
- A mad man, but a man all the same: Jervis is by no means a superhuman, he is but a man with all the mortal limitations that comes with this, and at that, he isn't even very good at self defense, relying entirely on cunning plans, traps and goons to defend himself.
Subject History
Jervis Tetch was a lonely soul growing up who never had any friends, mostly due to his strange appearance and personality. Being as lonely as he was, Tetch took to reading, and over the years became enamored with the works of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through he Looking Glass", though by fair his favorite chapter was by far the "Mad Tea Party", as Jervis identified with the strange and odd Mad Hatter, who regardless of his quirks, was both social and interesting, managing to hold the company of Alice, albeit only for a while. As an adult, Jervis became a neural scientist, finding great interest and fascination in the workings of the mind and brain, both chemical and biological. Jervis was in fact so skilled within his field he earned a job working for Wayne Enterprises. It was also during this time that Jervis developed the prototype to his mind controlling devices. However, despite working with a company as prestigious as Wayne Enterprises, Jervis still lived in a boarding house owned by one Ella Littleton. While still a lonely man, or perhaps because of this and his polite and kind behavior, Jervis befriended Ella's daughter Connie as well as some of Connie's friends from her high school.
However, unbeknownst to everyone, it would be a series of events involving the Littletons that would start Jervis spiral that would eventually lead to the birth of the Mad Hatter. Having lived with the Littletons for a few years, Connie became pregnant. For reasons ranging from shame to fearing the reaction and potential punishment of her mother, Connie lied about the pregnancy, claiming the child was the product of rape, claiming the rapist belonged to her school's baseball team. Distraught, Ella approached Jervis, asking for his help in punishing the baseball team, convincing him that the boys were bad kids. However, unbeknownst to Ella, Jervis mental health had begun slipping and instead of teaching them a lesson, he instead used his invention to control a member of the team, having him use a pipe bomb to kill every member of the team.
Having been the orchestrator of such a massacre, Jervis already slipping mental health deteriorated even further and at a much faster rate, resulting in Jervis becoming both obsessive and delusional, modelling himself after The Mad Hatter from his beloved "Alice in Wonderland". With his now persona and obsessiveness with Alice, the perfect girl in his deranged mind, but whom he believed to always be lost, waiting for him to find her, and wielding his vast genius and mind control technology, Jervis went on a crime spree, kidnapping young women who physically resembled Lewis Carroll's description of Alice. The fortunate ones caught by the Mad Hatter was sold into slavery once Jervis realized they were in fact not really his beloved Alice, while the less fortunate was never heard from again. In the end of this first crime spree, Jervis was finally stopped by Batman and was arrested before being deemed insane by the court and sent to Arkham Asylum.
Jervis occasionally allied with other villains in an attempt to kill Batman, from Black Mask to Scarecrow, Bane, Hush and many others, using his many skills of mind control and manipulation to benefit their wicked plans, among which Jervis even kidnapped Lucius Fox of Wayne Enterprises, holding him for ransom after extracting confidential knowledge about some of Fox inventions.
Jervis has also had his own experiences with larger team ups, most infamously when Catman approached him with a request to join the Secret Six in opposition to The Society, a request Jervis accepted. However, while working with the team was very rewarding, the team even claiming to be Jervis friends, not everything was a dance on roses, as the thorns soon showed themselves. While standing atop Vandal Savage's destroyed base with Ragdoll after a particularly nasty fight, expressing his joy and gratitude, Jervis was betrayed and pushed off the building by Ragdoll, who feared Jervis would fill his niche on the team. Jervis survived the fall, but heartbroken and betrayed, he vowed his revenge before returning to Gotham, still on the hunt for his precious, beloved Alice.
Subject Interview
"Do you ever think that maybe, just maybe, there is a better tomorrow, even for one whom fate itself has transpired against? Whom the very queen herself has marked as her enemy, spending every waking moment seeking to take the one thing most precious to me away?" The man asked as he sat in his chair, a pensive look on his face as he looked into his cup of tea. next to him, the fire flickered in the fireplace, casting long, yet cozy shadows over the room. The rain was falling outside, tip tap tapping on the window, yet in that living room, it was almost cozy. "I know I haven't always been the best, but I try and try, I beat every test, I fight and fight and look and look, and finally I find you, and at that moment, the light shines through the clouds, and the madness is gone. I'm me, and no one else, no longer lost nor alone, nothing to atone..and I have hope, I dare hope this time they don't take you away, this time I've found you for good.." Jervis then sighed, taking a sip of tea before looking ahead, a soft smile forming on his face.
"You're the only thing that matters...the only thing...but they just..just won't let me be HAPPY!" The smile quickly warping into a sneer as his voice rose in pitch, his brows furrowing as his grip on the cup tensed. "Why can't they let me be HAPPY?! Wherever I look, I'm hunted or betrayed...he threw me off a building, can you believe that? and they dared calling themselves my FRIENDS!" The last word almost spat in contempt. "But I won't let them..none of them, none of them shall take you..not the bat, the cat or the bird brat...Nor Bane nor Crane, nor Penguin nor Joker...no, my sweet, sweet Alice..I promise, this time, this time things shall be different, things shall be right. We'll be happy, we'll be together..Just you and me my Sweet Alice..just you and me.." And with those words, Jervis stood, a soft smile once more on his lips as he walked around the table, kissing the blonde girl opposite him on the forehead, looking at her with loving adoration.
He then yawned, still smiling as he rested a gentle hand on her shoulder. "It's getting late and I am tired my dear, sweet Alice. I think I shall retire for the night. Don't stay up too late, we have a long day ahead of us tomorrow." And with that, Jervis left the room, heading to bed. It wouldn't be before the next morning that his happiness would be shattered, finding his Alice sitting right where he left her. When he left her that very evening, Lillian Moore, a girl of 21's heart had already stopped three hours ago. Organ failure, due to infection. Jervis screams would reflect the deepest agony and would be close to shattering glass. But only for a moment, because, as he'd remember after all, this was just some meaningless girl.
And Alice was still out there, waiting for him to find her
