Full Name: Gunter Braun
Aliases: DJ Javelin
Marital Status: Single
Affiliation: The Suicide Squad
Meta-Human Abilities: N/A
•Peak Physique: As an Olympic athlete, Braun hit peak human fitness early on in his life. He wields tremendous upper body strength and has earned a gold medal from how far he can hurl one of his javelins.
•Limited Engineering: The vast majority of his gadgets are hand made based off designs, ideas, or weapons Gunter has stolen through out his career and implemented into his spears.
•Martial Arts: In order to gain headway as a mercenary, Javelin needed to learn proper fighting technique and self defense. He became an expert in spear and bō staff fighting along his travels, and self taught a mix of the classic fighting styles with his own gadgetry. With a total mastery wielding his weapon of choice, the mighty javelin spear, he is a surprising force to be reckoned with in battle. Though he is less proficient without his weapon of choice, Gunter is still adept in hand-to-hand combat.
•Javelin Costume: A colorful but flexible outfit that allows Gunter to carry over a dozen extendible javelin spears on his belt and few harnesses. The boots of his costume are rocket propelled and allow him to leap inhuman bounds and allow limited flight abilities.
•Trick Javelins: The tools of his trade are an arsenal of extendable javelins holstered on his belt and various harnesses. Some are normal spears, but others are gadgets tricked out for more versatile combat abilities. These include, but are not limited to:
-Self accelerating javelins
•Braun Not Brain: Gunter Braun is a bit of a dullard. Whilst he is able to tinker around with some of his own equipment, he lacks a great deal of common sense and will often charge recklessly into a fight. He’s a simple jock with less muscle in the mind and more in his aesthetics. These arrogant dim-witted moments are most often his downfall, and have almost killed him.
•Human Limit: Javelin like most athletes lives by the old adage, “no pain, no gain”. That being said, his very human body can only take so much of said pain. He is able to push himself to the limit, but he is certainly no Meta-Human and cannot sustain the strength or damage Superman or Grundy can.
•Empathy: Beneath the flirty arrogant jock is actually quite a caring heart. He cares very deeply about his teammates, which is a detriment in his line of work. Braun forms bonds and friendships quite quickly, and gets attached to the point where he’ll sacrifice his life. Javelin values all life
•Sportsmanship: Javelin values competition and beating an opponent fair and square, and this is an attribute which can be easily appealed to. He’ll be quick to try and prove he’s physically superior at something, and he’ll often overestimate his own abilities. If an enemy is outmatched, Gunter may offer a way to even the odds and make his victory more hard fought and in his mind, well earned.
Born in the Franconian Bavarian region of South Germany, Gunter Braun was a sporty young lad of impeccable physique. Scoring low marks in school, Braun was always more of a jock. He was a star athlete in school with a love of music and always had girls swooning over him. This made him an arrogant teen, and this arrogance trailed on into his adulthood. Braun perfected his body at a young age and became an Olympic javelin hurler, representing Germany and proudly earning a gold medal. Everything in Gunter’s life had been almost perfect, that is until a javelin related incident disgraced him as an athlete and barred him from ever returning to the Olympic Games.
Bitter, angry, and desperate, Braun turned to a life of crime. Honing and modifying his talents to become an international mercenary, enlisting a squadron of thugs and a menagerie specialized trick javelins for his new career as the villain known as Javelin. A string of successful missions, including a run-in with the super-heroine Skyrocket, caught the attention of the Monitor who recommended the criminal to Congressman Jason Bloch. As part of his vendetta against Ferris Aircraft, Bloch enlisted Javelin and his goons to steal a high-performance solar jet engine in order sink the aerospace company. This heist caught the attention of Green Lantern, who’s alter ego Hal Jordan, Ferris Aircraft employed. Javelin triumphed over the Lantern in their first scuffle and fled with his cache. Braun’s mission was to destroy the engine so as to slowly destroy the aerospace company; however, in his arrogance he came up with a new scheme. Put the engine inside a rocket and aim it at Ferris in order to immediately destroy it and earn double the money. This allowed Hal Jordan to both find Javelin and his goons as well as take the engine back to Ferris.
Javelin and his gang were arrested and sent to Belle Reave Penitentiary. There, he was recruited by Amanda Waller to join the infamous U.S. black ops team Task Force X, called the Suicide Squad by its members. His first mission, led by Rick Flag, had Deadshot, Bronze Tiger, Duchess, and Captain Boomerang infiltrate a russian prison to rescue captured agent Nemesis. What Javelin and the other members did not know, was that the mission was unsanctioned, and the Justice League was sent in to prevent an international incident. On field, the opposing force was led by the Martian Manhunter, and Javelin was swiftly defeated by Booster Gold. His defeat was humiliating, and started a growing trend of his associates questioning his abilities.
For his second mission as a member of Task Force X, Amanda Waller and Teth Adam assembled a new larger crew for an infiltration of the witch Circe’s island fortress in an attempt to an end a war between the gods. Rather than facing the horde of Werebeasts and Amazonians, Javelin and Captain Boomerang slipped out of the battle field to accompany Nightshade who was hunting down Circe. When they stumbled upon the witch, Gunter arrogantly and impulsively hurled a javelin towards her. Circe took control of the spear with her magic, and forced it to chase Braun around the room. He was unsuccessful in escaping the enchanted weapon, and it impaled him in the shoulder. His teammates assumed he was dead, and simply abandoned him on the island. A fact which Gunter was furious about.
With a tarnished name, damaged pride, and a betrayal of those he’d called friends, Braun became embittered and quite melancholy. He escaped the island a failure but unwilling to give up. Fleeing to Germany under the radar, Javelin enlisted a new crew of four and attempted a bank robbery on mainland U.S.A, but was interpreted by the heroine Skyrocket. After boasting about how he had defeated her prior, he and his crew were swiftly mopped up. He escaped before he could be sent back to Belle Reave, and was soon contested by the supervillain Firebug. Firebug assembles a small group of costumed criminals, all of them wanting revenge against Deadshot for one reason or the other. Gunter was still quite sour about the incident with Circe, and blamed Lawton for his abandonment. The group staged a surprise attack against the assassin, and Javelin attempted to hurl a concussive-explosive spear into marksman; however Lawton sniped the javelin while it was still in his grip, and the explosion sent him reeling out of the building unconscious.
Defeat after defeat put the once popular jock into a depressive slump. In the supervillain community, Javelin was widely ridiculed. Classed as a z-lister, and a joke villain. He had always been the most popular boy around, and for the first time in his life he was one one of the losers; and this was a feeling he did not like. Depression gnawed at him from the inside out, but he was still determined to make a name for himself. When Evan McCulloch, the second Mirror Master was assembling a rag tag team of super villains for a secret mission against Amanda Waller, Gunter quickly enlisted. He was promised a clear criminal record, however; his first mission was unauthorized and his second he was reported M.I.A. Therefore, the Wall never kept her end of the bargain, and Braun was furious. The mission was not authorized by the Secret Society of Supervillains, and so it was doomed from the start. A trap was set up, and team member Punch was fatally shot. His wife, Jewelee was hysterical and didn’t notice a runaway jeep careening right for her. Braun leapt in front of the vehicle, shoving her out of the way, but getting run over in the process. He was severely injured, and the team abandoned him assuming he was dead, but as luck would have it, Javelin survived and mended his wounds.
Desperate for work and notoriety, Gunter enlisted into a team of supervillains working for Prometheus. But they were merely used a distraction by Prometheus for his real plans. Javelin and the other villains were defeated by the team led by Green Arrow and Green Lantern, though he attempted one last shot at the emerald archer which was intercepted by supergirl. He was loser, and hated that feeling. The emotional pain was beyond anything he’d ever experienced, and Gunter was now determined that no other villain would feel like an outcast and a washout like he had...
