The sun shined down on Lex Luthor as he stood at the helm of his six-hundred million dollar yacht basking in the warmth of the rays. His emerald colored eyes were hidden behind the tinted glass of over prices sunglasses, they weren't bothering to marvel at the scenery anyway. As the cool salty breeze of the sea air rushed past Luthor and through his open white linen shirt, he stared at the hunk of lead in his hands. The billionaire moved backward so that he could sit in one of the hand crafted chairs behind him. The yacht cruised steadily as Lex used both hands to slowly pry the lead box open, his face slowly awashed with orange vibrancy. The reinforced hinge of the box spray open and the orange ring within floated up from the cushioned inside, hovering mere inches away from Lex's sunglassed face.
Cawing of seagulls that circled the boat was silenced immediately. The slogging sounds of waves rolling and crashing and lapping all around his boat muted along with the rest of the world. Lex's gaze, attention, and mind were all zeroed in on the ring that floated before him. It called to him. It urged and begged him. The ring was powerful. It could do anything, make anything, give anything. And what did Lex Luthor deserve besides everything? He was a man above men. A titan to the mere mortals that crawled on their bellies the world over. Luthor knew he was greatness that still failed to be fully recognized or appreciated, and how could he be with beings like Superman around. The public's fawning over Superman was as tiring as it was idiotic. What Superman had, Lex deserved! The love, the adoration, the respect. It was all Lex's by right dammit!
As Lex's mind became alight with these bubbling thoughts, so too did the ring begin to burn brighter and brighter.
Lex wouldn't stop at the praise and love though. He could have the entire world. Nothing would be unattainable for Lex Luthor, not with the ring. He would finally have all that he desired and rightfully deserved, and that was everything!
Lex suddenly regained his own mind and snapped the lead box shut over the orange ring. His jaws clenched as he slowly felt the grips of the avarice slowly receding and slipping out of his veins. That ring was a danger, he had long ago acknowledged the fact. While it was as powerful as a Green Lantern's ring (perhaps even moreso) it also came with a great price. It drove Lex's greed to impossible depths and warped his mind in a way that made him lose sight of his true intentions. At the back of his mind he wondered then, why did he keep the ring in his possession? Surprisingly, he had no answer readily available to himself.
As he was unable to answer his own question, Lex was also unable to know that unboxing his orange lantern ring for such a time would have unforeseeable ramifications. Namely that a beacon had been sent out without his knowledge. A beacon noticeable to other rings of its kind...and perhaps other things as well.
