The images that raced across her mind's eye were foggy, with a slight crystalline sheen to them. She could make out basic shapes, get a feel for thoughts and their attached meaning, but without focus, little more. It was a sensation that often accompanied her probing of an unwilling psyche, and the S.T.A.R labs guard, struggling against his bonds, was no different. He could no doubt feel her presence, note her consciousness influencing his own, and it was likely to make him even more uncomfortable than he already felt, surrounded by less-than-impressed meta heroes.
At first, M'gann had felt a little bad for him - tied to a chair and interrogated by teenagers, though it wasn't a feeling that was long-lived. Indeed, the moment it had been revealed that he'd allowed a criminal element to infiltrate numerous S.T.A.R labs facilities, she'd come to the quick conclusion that he deserved everything he'd experienced.
Who he'd allowed to infiltrate the complex, however, and what they'd been looking for – that remained a mystery. The duplicitious guard was far less forthcoming with that information, even with various threats made by her friends: none of whom carried them out. The guard just laughed them off in the end, and rather than continue with their line of questioning, M'gann had been asked to step in.
If they were to stop the thieves the guard had both aided and abetted, they needed answers. A gifted telepath; Miss Martian was able to retrive those answers with a judicial application of mental force. She'd been hesitant, not always comfortable with prying into the minds of individuals set against it, though she had agreed after a short deliberation: there was no other way, and the man whose brain she was to ferret through was not, in any way, a 'good' man.
Her first scan of surface thoughts, however, had revealed nothing – just the hazy images she had sifted through. To find anything of any use, she was going to have to dive deeper – something she'd expected, but had hoped to avoid.
With a deep breath, she pushed her conscious up against the misty, frosted layer that protected his own, and after a moment or two, felt herself move through it – a feeling comparable to forcing a finger through jello. Once on the other side, she was assaulted by noise, near indecipherable whispers of worry and desire, and her face – locked in concentration where she sat, only feet away from the guard – creased with a slight frown. He did not want her there – not that he had a choice.
“This isn't nice,” muttered M'gann aloud, audible to the other Teen Titans, made more so by the fact the guard, whose consciousness was linked to the Martian's uttered the exact same words, in a very similar tenor.
